After all – Puerto Escondido is known as the place where “you’re only just getting started.” (on adventure, of course!) So after deciding which transportation option works best ( vans or buses?), here is the info you’re going to need before you start your adventure.
Getting to Puerto Escondido from Oaxaca
The main ways to get from Oaxaca all have their own pros and cons. For example, flying is the fastest but you miss out on seeing Mexican culture in person!
The other options range from long public buses that take riders through mountain passes with steep hillsides to collectivo vans that can take you in comfort along the mountain passes.
Travelling from Oaxaca City to Puerto Escondido
You can save yourself some time by flying from Oaxaca. If you’re on a tight schedule then this may be your best option.
The most popular airline for direct flights from Juchipila is Aerotucan with fares starting at $150 USD one way at the time of this writing(about 40 minutes).
Although this is the most efficient way to get to Puerto Escondido, it is probably the highest priced option. That being said, convenience sometimes costs a little more.
The sooner you book your flight, the better. Flights get sold out fast even a week or more in advance. If there’s one thing I can’t stress enough is- buy those plane tickets now because they won’t last long.
The Best Ways to Book Your Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido Flight
1.Book on the Aerotucan website directly.
Head to the Aerotucan website and search for availability. You can reserve tickets online and there are occasional specials so if you’re flexible on dates you may be able to get a cheap ticket!
The site only offers Spanish language translation services– however if you are in a hotel the front desk staff will be able help if you need them.
2. Reserve your tickets right at the airline.
If you’re at Oaxaca City or Puerto Escondido airport, then your tickets can be reserved and paid for directly through the Aerotucan counter. This is not the easiest option as you have to go down to the airport but might make you feel more secure about buying tickets.
3. Use a local travel agent.
If you’re looking to book transportation in Oaxaca City, you can go right to a local travel agent. They will do all the work for you and book your transporation. Just bear in mind that with a middleman sometimes the price will be higher in order to cover the cost of their services.
4. Call the airline direct.
When booking flights online, sometimes its best to contact the airline directly.
If you encounter issues with their website it’s easier at times to call and speak to a human being. You can confirm your booking or make an absolutely new booking and have peace of mind that you won’t have any problems getting on board when tickets sell out!
When you need to get from place A to B but have no time for planning out your flight, another option is private aviation.
One such option is AeroVega – a small plane with seating for 6 people..
You travel by yourself and they will even transport your pet so there’s nothing standing between you and getting to Puerto Vallarta. They can be reached on their facebook page under AeroVega. You can also contact Don Vega through email email@example.com or call 529545880062 to ask about availability.
Renting a Private Car From Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido
If you’re looking for a way to enjoy Mexico’s beautiful scenery without having any worries about getting lost or stuck in traffic, then taking a private car from Oaxaca City might be just what the doctor ordered.
For you this might mean driving along zig-zagging roads that will lead you down south towards Puerto Escondido and some relaxation time.
The drive in a private car takes approximately 7 hours but luckily there are plenty of pit stops along the way. The drivers are usually open to stopping and buying snacks along the way as well as making some pit stops which can make the drive much more enjoyable.
The drivers tend to be friendly and professional and are usually on time. The best way to make sure you get a good driver is by checking availability before your trip starts since this method of travel can sometimes be pretty busy during high season (December to April).
A private car service will usually allow you to hook up your own music and it’s pretty easy to enjoy the ride when listening to your favorite playlist!
How to Take a Bus Between Oaxaca and Puerto Escondido
If you’re looking for a very budget-friendly way to get from Oaxaca City to the coast of Oaxaca, then taking either of these two buses might be your best bet.
The Service Express Arista or Villa del Pacifico Bus leaves when they have enough passengers and costs approx $235 MXN. It will take you from Oaxaca city to Puerto Escondido airport. It’s an uncomfortable ride with no bathrooms but it beats walking if you’re on a budget.
Remember with all the twisting and turning mountain roads that motion sickness can be quite a reality so so make sure that doesn’t bother you before deciding if this option suits you.
Rent a Car and Drive Yourself
Taking a road trip is an excellent way to enjoy the scenery and see how different areas of this beautiful country look from afar.
I recommend always driving during daylight because it’s safer, however if you have plenty more time on hand then go for whatever hour takes best advantage of the light!
Sometimes renting a car is a good option if you’re traveling with friends or family members who don’t drive much at all but want to contribute towards gas expenses. Just be ready to do the majority of the driving which an be tiring.
Even though highway 175 is the longer and slower of these two routes, it’s in much better condition. If you are traveling from Oaxaca City to Puerto Escondido then we recommend taking this route as there’s no chance your trip will be disrupted by any accidents or traffic jams along the way.
Highway 131 offers a shorter ride but a bumpier ride than Highway 175 and not as recommended but if the bumps don’t matter you can make this choice.
Just a note: When the roads are scheduled for an upgrade in Mexico, it can have major consequences. There is a new highway being built and at the time of this writing is “supposed” to be done in 2023 (although that is just an estimate).
Of course if the new highway opens it will definitely reduce journey times and car rental options could be limited at some airports.

This scenic Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido bus ride takes longer than other options because it avoids all the very windy roads up and takes a more indirect path through mountain passes – this may be good news for anyone prone toward motion sickness.
