The origins of salsa music

It’s not just Venezuela that has a claim to introducing salsa into the world; it was also in New York where this Latin genre first took form.

However, there are some who say radio station Radio Difusora Venezolana had something to do with giving rise to the popularity of salsa songs.

On its program “La hora de la Salsa,” which began in 1964, people suddenly started hearing music so fresh and new-sounding – yet somehow familiar at times too–that they couldn’t help dancing along with it.

The presenter of that Venezuelan program was called Fidias Danilo Escalona, and he set out to popularize these rhythms and some of the best latino rhythms were born.

He started interviewing singers from different Caribbean islands such as Puerto Rico and Cuba who were performing their music style and lo and behold, Latin-American contemporary rhythm & blues was a hit, otherwise known as “salsa”.
